In the fall of 2014, The American University in Cairo coordinated with a group of former students to raise funds for an annual award in memory of George Scanlon’s dedication to teaching and his multidisciplinary approach to the study of Islamic culture.  The university has established an endowment from the initial proceeds of this campaign that will fund this annual award.  The merit-based award will be granted annually for the most distinguished master's thesis produced by a student in the Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations (ARIC), the department in which Scanlon was a professor for most of his professional career. A departmental award committee will consider master's theses successfully defended by students across the various specializations of the ARIC department over a two-year rolling window. The first annual award ceremony will be held on April 22, 2017 in Oriental Hall AUC Tahrir Square at 6:00 pm and will feature Bernard O'Kane, professor in the ARIC department, as an invited keynote speaker from the Cairo academic community who will recognize the award recipient and commemorate the namesake.
