 Red Lines Red Dots

Mouneer Alshaarani Design Retrospective

Mouneer Alshaarani, one of the most acknowledged and acclaimed contemporary calligraphers in the Arab world. Over the years, Alshaarani has taken the task of reviving and developing the heavy ethical and cultural heritage of Arabic calligraphy. His constant research has led him to his own hallmark style, beyond the stagnancy of calligraphic imitations.

Alshaarani’s reputation as an accomplished calligrapher may far precede his multifarious involvement and contribution to graphic design. This may be since the majority of his designs were either unsigned or published under his pseudo name “Emad Halim”. Having led a challenging life of political and social activism, Mouneer has crossed several redlines. That had resulted in a four decades’ journey of exile through several Pan Arab cultural and publication hubs, including Beirut, Cyprus, Tunisia and Cairo. During which he produced a rich array of calligraphic work, corporate and editorial designs.

Red Lines Red Dots” design retrospective showcases Alshaarani’s work since the 1970s until present time, highlighting his creative process, and stopping at significant stations that influenced his ideologies and shaped the body of his work.

Curated by Nagla Samir, the exhibition will be on display at the Sharjah Art Gallery, AUC New Cairo Campus, February 18th to March 8th, 2018.
