Organized by Sharjah Art Foundation, the Ministry of Culture Egypt, Sector of Fine Arts, and the American University in Cairo, When Art Becomes Liberty: The Egyptian Surrealists (1938-1965) is a major international touring exhibition that opens on September 28, 2016 at the Palace of Arts, El Gezirah, Cairo and is ongoing until October 29, 2016. The opening will be from 7:00 - 9:00 pm on September 28. 

Focusing on the evolution of the Egyptian Surrealist group and their relationship with their Western and international counterparts, the exhibition documents a pivotal chapter of modernism in Egpyt that spans from the late 1930s to the early 1960s and highlights the multifaceted aspects of modernity and its global interconnectedness in the 20th century.

This exhibition is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation Director Hoor Al Qasimi, Dr Salah M. Hassan, Goldwin Smith Professor and Director, Institute for Comparative Modernities, Cornell University, Ehab Ellaban, Ufuq Gallery, Cairo, and Nagla Samir, Associate Professor of Arts, American University in Cairo.
